The classic saga of the old man and the kid.Somewhere beyond the smoke, beer, whiskey and the goddamn cocaine, there is a sweet story about connection, fear of death, and the light oftruth that trickles in past the horrors of living.

Shoot From The Hip a poetic novel edition by Chad Christensen Literature Fiction eBooks

Christensen's book Shoot from the Hip portrays an age-old theme, while intertwining it with modern perspective. The saga of the old man and the kid rages within a conversational, ranting voice, allowing the reader to flow easily through the poems while maintaining the level of excitement intended by the author. Christensen excels in relating to a generation familiar, and comfortably intrigued, by a world of seemingly absolute absurdity. The portrayal of intense insanity resounds throughout the poetic novel, oftentimes reflected in a consistent sense of paranoia. Yet, to limit these collected poems to the above definition would simply not do justice; interwoven with nearly each drunken, drug-induced rant, be it the old man or the kid, are themes of universal relevance. The most prevalent of these include mentorship and idolization, substance abuse, and my personal favorite, the worry that "people have been reprogrammed" (p. 31).
The two central characters of Shoot from the Hip, the old man and the kid, are introduced in the opening poem of the novel. Their relation to each other remains unstated throughout, and a tone of unimportance is taken in the matter. Instead, Christensen focuses on the ground shared by the two characters, and on the respect the kid maintains for his mentor. Interestingly, "Chapter 1" provides a clue to the book's conclusion, shown in the old man's statement "this is going to end badly" (p. 1). The relationship of the two characters seems to be that of teacher and pupil, while remaining on ground that has no use for such aspects as superiority. Instead, the two feed off one another's energy, building a consistent suspense sure to resonate with any reader. By working with two characters that vary greatly in age, Christensen succeeds in representing views from several generations, bridging a gap that traditionally divides an audience of readers.
Shoot from the Hip reverberates with a sense of concern for the present order of the world, and Christensen blends this well with brute reality. For example, several poems contain rants questioning the way the world is run. For example, "Chapter 7" states,
"why's that governor?/ it ain't right./ we weren't meant for that./ ten. twelve hour shift./ pissing your life away to ship things./ move matter./ it ain't right./ just the end of the line for people without a choice/ or people like me/ too dumb to make a choice" (p. 14). This poem highlights a prominent social issue, while maintaining a voice that entices the reader. Christensen's statement against indifference echoes from the pages of Shoot from the Hip. If you are one of the "reprogrammed," Christensen's words will force you from that crevice of indifference in which you so comfortably reside, igniting a flame that is impossible to ignore. Shoot from the Hip is a must-read, and eyes should remain peeled for new publications by Christensen and Pseudo Poseur Productions.
